Afternoon walk in Branderbourg gate area
“When the child was a child, it walked with its arms swinging. It wanted the stream to be a river, the river a torrent, and this puddle to be the sea. When the child was a child, it didn’t know it was a child. Everything was full of life, and all life was one. When the child was a child, it had no opinion about anything, no habits. It often sat cross-legged, took off running, had a cowlick in its hair, and didn’t make faces when photographed” (Damiel, Wings of Desire).
Podsdamer platz and Branderburger Gate are also located in central district of Berlin, Mitte. For me it was just few blocs from my hotel NH Berlin Mitte and of course I can’t miss the places where two angels, Damiel and Cassiel from Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin) walked invisibly days and nights, observing life of human beings. One of my favourite movies, indeed. But we are in Berlin of 2015, modern, free and multicultural. Let’s come back to that sunny day in September.
1.Memorial to Murdered Jews of Europe or, in another words, Holocaust Memorial, is very close to Podsdamer platz and can’t be missed.
2.There are 2,711 concrete columns forming a vast mazelike memorial, with an underground exhibition room. From the street one has an impression that all blocs are the same height. Although, the further you go the taller blocs grow and at the end you find yourself alone between speechless concrete columns, impossible to find your companions and the way out.
4.Terrifying place. Especially if to keep in mind the history and all the horrors of Holocaust.
7.From the Holocaust memorial it takes just few minutes to come to Brandenburger Tor (Gate), also a well known symbol of Berlin.
8.The square nearby is always busy either with some demonstrations or political protests…
11.The embassy of Russia is also very close, on Unter den Linden avenue, a wide and busy transport artery of Berlin.
13.Unter den Linden faces.
14.Here is Franzosische Strasse, a shopping area with boutiques, shopping molls and commercial centres in every building.
Good shopping, folks 🙂
